From Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment, Batman Arkham Origins is the next instalment in the blockbuster Batman: Arkham videogame franchise. Developed by WB Games Montréal, the game features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the first two critically acclaimed games of the franchise. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young and unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, players will meet many important characters for the first time and forge key relationships.

The post Batman Arkham Origins – Official Trailer appeared first on The Game Jar.

This week Microsoft released figures detailing the relative sizes of different sectors within the games industry. The image below shows the total size of the video-games market ($65 Billion), and splits it into consoles, PC gaming, social/browser, handheld, and of course tablet and mobile. The headline figure (literally) is that Consoles are still the daddy, accounting for the vast majority of global gaming revenue. It feels good to be king. At $27 billion revenue – that’s 42% of the whole industry – it’s easy to see why Sony and Microsoft make such a big deal about new-gen console announcements. Tomorrow Microsoft will take the floor and announce their new hardware. All we really know so far is what the rumour-mill has thrown at us – that the console may just be named “Xbox”, there might be some sort of ‘touch’ option on the controller – ok, we’ll stop boring you with month-old speculation. More interesting to us is what this view (if accurate) means for Nintendo. This graphic is a great way of visualising how important the WiiU’s failure would be. If Nintendo lose their grip on the console marketplace, they lose access to $27 billion of sales opportunity, leaving them with only $8 billion from handhelds. What would investors and banks think? This is why it is almost daft to say “but they make money on 3DS”. Sure they do – but it won’t be enough to sustain the Nintendo we knew and loved. In fact, that’s exactly why we’ve said you can expect to see Mario on the Playstation 5. If the WiiU is the last home console Nintendo release (which is a distinct possibility), they’ll need to claw back at some of that $27 billion console market, even if it means publishing their IP on their former rivals. That’s exactly what happened to Sega. Will history repeat itself? This chart was included in a batch of other analytical images that were discussed on Major Nelson’s podcast before hitting the new ‘Xbox Wire’ news service this morning. We’ve included another interesting image below – a view on the performance of the last three console generations. From these figures, Microsoft optimistically predicts a further 28% growth over the PS4/720 generation. What’s the most interesting to us is the latency of each transition between generations. For example, the PS1 era section of the graph seems to creep so far forward that it overlaps the 360 release. Even when the latest console is at its peak, there’s still a sizable chunk of the previous gen going strong below. Maybe, just maybe this is a glimmer of hope for Nintendo? If this kind of gaming maths turns you on, check out our mathematical history of the games industry!

The post Console Still the King of Gaming, According to Microsoft appeared first on The Game Jar.

About this time every year the gaming community belly-flops into a sea of wild speculation about what they will see at E3. But this year is different. Microsoft and Sony are jumping ship and having their own events to make their grand announcements. And Nintendo, the slow (but surprisingly entertaining) kid of the family, decide they just can’t be arsed this year. So it seems like it will be more fun to brood over what won’t happen in Los Angeles this June, rather than what will. Well, let’s do that, then! Sony/Microsoft Backtrack on Family Focus and Dedicate the New Consoles to Core Gaming That’s right – we won’t see sugar-coated propaganda of happy inter-racial families smiling and playing Kinect 2.0 together as if Kim Jong Un is watching. We won’t see the strangely attractive ‘mother’ swiping her hand around to select a movie for a little happy baby to watch, or shouldn’t-be-attractive teenage daughter using Xbox to order a prom dress. Oh god. We will, won’t we. Little known fact: “Kinect” actually stands for “Kim Is Never Ever Cruel To us”…ahem… Microsoft are seen as being the worst offender in this area, but in our opinion the Jamie Redknapp/JLS adverts make Nintendo equally culpable. The sad fact is they have to market these vastly powerful machines to the whole family to encourage them to buy one. Let’s at least hope they’ll strike a nice balance and actually show us some exciting games. Fingers and toes crossed. Nintendo Considered Winners of E3 2013 In football (soccer) they say “you can’t score if you don’t shoot”. In the games industry we say “you can’t win if you don’t turn up”. Nintendo have decided they won’t do a traditional show this year. They’ll be around to show off a few new things on the floor, but there won’t be the usual dedicated event. It doesn’t mean that Nintendo can’t impress us; if some of the games they show off include a HD Zelda, new Mario Kart, and some big new third party titles, it certainly won’t go unnoticed. However, E3 inevitably focuses public interest on the big dedicated events, and with Sony and Microsoft set to spend the whole thing blowing our minds with next-gen tech, Nintendo are in serious danger of being sidelined. “Oh yeah, Nintendo were at E3, weren’t they… so anyway, about PS4…” Major New Consoles Announced By the time June 13th comes round, both of the next-gen consoles will have been announced (come on, WiiU doesn’t count!). So the simple fact is, new consoles will be discussed – not announced. This is an important distinction to make, as an announcement is generally preceded by a lot of boring build-up waffle. We all know what’s coming, but by god do Sony and Microsoft love their PR foreplay. Because this isn’t an announcement, we expect that we’ll (hopefully) skip the waffle and get straight into talking about what their new systems will offer. We expect to see game play footage, specs, partnerships, and… to see the consoles themselves. In fact, when you look at it like that, it’s probably a good thing that we’ll have got the boring announcement bit out of the way before E3 even happens. Roll on June. People Will Care about PS Vita We suspect that Sony have made a deal with the devil. Not the real Dark Lord – the one from Futurama, or Bedazzled, where he grants you a wish that turns out to be not as pleasant as you expected. “You wished for a really powerful handheld with adaptations of all the big console titles, didn’t you?” the Devil teases you. There’s just something… wrong with both the PSP and the Vita. Technically, they are excellent bits of hardware, but they seem to lack a certain soul. Just as if the Devil himself made them. Sure – there are lots of big games coming up for the Vita – Killzone, Final Fantasy, and Arkham Origins. That’s not even mentioning the usual games like FIFA or Call of Duty that will inevitably hit the console. But are they at the front of gamer’s minds? It’s doubtful that there’ll be many people obsessing over the Vita after the next Xbox/PS4 are shown off at E3 2013. Half Life 3 finally Announced – Set for Release this Holiday Firstly, apologies to those of you who Googled “Half Life 3 announced” and came here thinking you’d struck gold. No such announcement has been made, nor will it be made at this year’s E3. To be fair to Valve, there are some other pretty cool things they are working on, which we may get to glimpse at E3. Most noteworthy is the likely reveal of their own home console, the “Steam Box”. In some ways, Valve have done the opposite of Microsoft. They released their debut gaming hardware back at the turn of the millennium, and since then have built up an online community and infrastructure that’s allowing them to branch into phones, laptops and other areas. Valve started with this infrastructure and community when they created Steam. It’s like Xbox Live, but without dedicated hardware (an Xbox). Enter: Steam Box, at E3 2013. Maybe. Although, we can’t forget Mr Freeman. Half Life 3 has been the pot of gold at the end of the gaming rainbow for so long now that we’ve almost given up on it. Which will make it a whole lot cooler if something is indeed announced about Half life 3 at E3 2013. So there you have it – none of the above will happen at E3… probably. Thank you for reading and we hope you’ve learned nothing. Well – at least it’s more entertaining than the usual – “Our E3 Predictions”.

The post 5 Things That Won’t Happen At E3 2013 appeared first on The Game Jar.

I don’t wear glasses… although I probably should. Maybe even for driving – watch out people of Kent! Every day I sit at my computer and either write things for the website you now currently find yourself viewing, or editing articles and images, or producing the witty, charismatic enigma that resides in TheGameJar’s social media channels. Basically, every day I look at a screen, and every day my eyes get tired. Like so many of us working on computers daily, there comes a point when you have to rub your eyes and wish it didn’t give you such a headache. The same can be said for my gaming habits though – due to all the ‘work’ on my laptop, when I do find a rare day to actually sit down and play a game, I end up spending up to 12 hours at a time doing so. That hurts. My eyes end up streaming, and although that’s no one’s fault (really) but my own, I have often wondered if there’s a way of making the experience easier on my eyes. We’ve all heard the phrase: your eyes will go square if you watch too much TV. Although this probably isn’t the case, mum (we’ll ask Anthony to try it out in another ‘Science Of’ article, maybe), I could always exchange the word ‘square’ with sore, tired, strained. Surely having a box in your eye is going to hurt… so that’s where I see the logic… ahem. But where am I going with this? Surely I don’t want you to start sticking Lego in your eyes in the hope of replicating the same eyestrain we get from a day in front of the telly-box? Well, I’ve been lucky enough to try out a set of GUNNAR glasses over the last few weeks, to see if they make a difference to my every day issues while I work. The pair I’ve been trying are the Joule style (yes, that’s me in the picture), and instead of the yellow-tinted lenses you might have seen pro-gamers wearing, these have what GUNNAR have called Crystalline lenses. In other words, they’re clear, and look pretty much like everyday glasses you could buy from Specsavers. The difference is, the lenses of GUNNAR glasses are specifically tailored to help shield your eyes from screen glare. They have various ranges available on the website, depending on what you might be using them for; computers, gaming, shades and Crystalline. The majority of the ranges (minus Crystalline), have a yellow tint to the lenses, and are aimed specifically for gamers and PC users. Crystalline, however – the style I’m trying – cater for photographers, graphic designers etc, that need a clear colour palate to work, rather than having a soft yellow hue over everything. I’ve been wearing them now whenever I’m looking at a screen or the TV for about two weeks. The big question is: have they helped? Yes, and if I’m honest I can’t really go back to working with out them. During the first day or so wearing the glasses I have to admit I was sceptical; I felt a little queasy when looking up from the screen, and everything seemed a tad strange. Once my eyes adjusted however, and I actually got used to wearing glasses regularly for the first time in my life, I started to see the difference they made. I don’t have that sore, tired feeling in the evening when I’m watching TV, I don’t have to rub my eyes to stay focused. I especially notice the change when I forget to put them on in the morning when I start working; a few hours in and I wonder why I feel rough. They make my eyes feel… fresh. It’s the only way to describe it, and I’ve had less-frequent headaches as a result. ‘But I already wear glasses’ I hear you say! Not a problem – GUNNAR glasses can be made to prescription, so not only do you get lenses that stop you from bumping into things, but shield your eyes from screen glare. They have a great selection of frames too, so you’re bound to find something to suit your tastes. So, should you be wearing GUNNAR glasses if you sit at a computer all day? Probably, if you feel it gets too much sometimes. The back of the box they came in states that they “improve contrast for greater accuracy and efficiency, enhances detail for sharper, clearer vision, helps reduce glare and improve visual focus, enables precision optics for truest image, and provides long-haul comfort.” I’d say they keep to their word on all accounts; they do add contrast, reduce glare, and are reasonably comfortable for a whole day’s work. They’re one of those things that you need, but you might not have known that you need… dealing with tired eyes every working day just becomes the norm, but there another way! Now, I’m off to do more stuff, because I can…

The post GUNNAR Glasses – Joule Crystalline Review appeared first on The Game Jar.

How we wish we could tell you this is some sort of horrible, cruel joke. Sony Entertainment Pictures announced that they’ve secured the exclusive rights to an Angry Birds feature film. This raises a lot of questions – why now? Why ever? Has the world gone mad? Making a decent movie is literally an art-form. The greats like Tarantino, Nolan, and Spielberg spent years honing their creative skills to become the narrative and visual giants they are today. Who will be producing the Angry Birds movie? The game’s developers of course. Sure they’re signing John Cohen and David Maisel to sit in on the production, but this really looks to us like a recipie for cinematic disaster. Thank the gods it won’t be live-action, though, as the announcement reveals we’re looking at an animated feature. We love this quote from the announcement, by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton – “There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table” Clearly they’ve not heard of Ironman, Thor, Avengers, Star Trek, The Hobbit, Star Wars, Fast and Furious…actually – all of Hollywood. Just to really show how stupid this is, we compare this announcement to parody videos we’ve found on YouTube. In these videos, gritty movies are made of Tetris and Pacman. Both of these are better ideas than Angry Birds, and they’re still ludicrous. Well, if nothing else, enjoy a laugh or two at these mock trailers.

The post Angry Birds Movie Rights Bought by Sony, Set for 2016 Release appeared first on The Game Jar.

So, I finally caved in and bought an iPhone 5. I don’t regret it. In fact after suffering many years using first a Blackberry, and then even worse – a HTC, it was about time I got a phone I really liked, and one that can capably allow me to play games wherever I am! On my voyage to owning all consoles of this generation (save for a 360, and yes I’m counting the iPhone 5 as a console) I now have access to ‘applications’ and I thought I’d share with you my impressions on the first loads of apps that I happened to download. The first two games on my list are Temple Run 2 and Into The Dead. The reason I group these two games together is because they have both been out for a while now, and are also fairly similar in nature. Both involve non-stop running where you have to move the character to avoid certain objects. The objects specifically for Temple Run 2 are chasms, fire, stone walls, and a weird running bird-creature with a skull for a head that is constantly chasing you. Whereas with Into The Dead the objects are simply just zombies… The challenge in both comes from running as far as you can without dying. In Temple Run 2 the speed gets faster and faster, making it more difficult as you go along. With Into The Dead the difficulty increases as more and more undead appear in your way. Luckily you can wield a pistol to take out a few stray zombies, but you will mainly half to rely on your dodging skills. Both games are on par with each other and are also pretty basic. But then they are also both addictive, and surely that is the sign of a good game? Then we have Simpsons Tapped Out and Jurassic Park Builder. As before I have grouped these two together for the same reasons. Except in this case we move on from ‘running’ to ‘building’. In Tapped Out you build your own Springfield whilst allocating tasks to various characters from the show. The tasks take time though and you will find yourself having to wait long periods of time before you can play some more. It’s a similar scenario with Jurassic Park, except in this instance you are building a park of dinosaurs rather than your own town, and you don’t get the awful loading times that come with Tapped Out. There is also plenty more to do here – research fossils to breed new dinosaurs, stock food to feed them with, create other buildings and attractions, plus bulldozing down land in order to build more. My personal preference would be Jurassic Park. I don’t like having to wait 24 hours before I can do my next task, ala Tapped Out, whereas with Jurassic Park there’s enough to be doing whilst you’re waiting for your dinosaurs to grow, or your stock of food to come in. By all means try both, as they are free apps after all. Just don’t become so addicted to the games that you get roped into spending real money to get more cash and donuts within the games… Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy was an addition that I already actually owned on the 3DS but wanted to try out on the iPhone. The fact that it was free helped this matter, as well as having an additional mode where you can create your own songs. The basis of the game is to tap and swipe along to songs. Circles move along the screen and you will have to tap as they pass over one of your four chosen characters. Arrows indicate that you must swipe and long bars mean that you must hold your finger down. The animation looks lovely, with cutesy looking versions of your favourite characters, and there is a load of unlockable content to boot. Any Final Fantasy fan who appreciates the genius music from the series should consider this game a must. Lastly we have Walking Dead Assault. At first it was infuriating; trying to complete as early as level 3 without upgrading, simply because I wanted to save enough points to get Michonne as a handy addition to my team. Of course my adamant side got the better of me and you don’t actually have to do this straight away. Therefore the frustration I received was my own doing and once I had Michonne, and began to upgrade my characters stats, I found myself moving through the levels of the game and thoroughly enjoying it as I did. You look down on your characters from a slanted birds-eye-view, much like old school Grand Theft Auto, as you move through various scenes from the first graphic novel – Days Gone Bye. It remains true to the comic by being black and white, with the extra additions of red blood (can anyone say Sin City?), and you get to choose a total of 4 characters for each level from a total of 10, all of whom are in the first graphic novel. Well, save for Michonne. Each character has their own weapons and skills and you will find yourself using a different variety to achieve different tasks. The main aim in each level is to kill all the walkers. You point where you want your characters to move and they will attack automatically if there are nearby enemies. You can collect ammo and points to upgrade, as well as attack hunters, cause herds to attack, and take on bonus objectives that if completed will grant you extra points, trivia, and artwork. I think it goes without saying that some of these games would be best played on an iPad simply because it has a bigger screen, and therefore would give you more room to control what is going on, particularly in the case of Walking Dead Assault where you have to move characters around with an urgency. The ‘speed-run’ games – Temple Run 2 + Into The Dead – I would actually prefer playing on the iPhone because all you’re doing is essentially swiping you finger at the right time to avoid obstacles and objects. As for the ‘builder’ games – Tapped Out + Jurassic Park – it could go either way. You have all the time in the world to create your worlds, and at no point did I find the iPhone’s screen too small to prevent me from playing them properly. That leaves Theatrhythm – simply put, if you have the joy of owning a 3DS then I would recommend that you get this game on that. Not only do you get a vast array of songs to play, rather than just 2 for the ‘app’ version (with plenty more that you have to purchase separately), as well as the glory of seeing your favourite Final Fantasy characters in ‘glasses-free’ 3D but personally I find it easier using the stylus rather than my forefinger. If I had to pick one game from the list it would have to be Walking Dead Assault. Sure, it is the only one of the bunch that you actually have to pay an initial sum for. But seeing as that price is as low as £1.99 it is a game that any Walking Dead fan would relish, especially with all the unlockable artwork you can use as your home/lock screen wallpaper. Just remember that all the other games are free and fun, so I would recommend giving them all a blast. Just don’t be a fool and spend your money on fake pink donuts that you can’t even eat! Into The Dead – Jurassic Park Builder – Simpson’s Tapped Out – Temple Run 2 – Theatrhythm – Walking Dead Assault

The post Sam Buys An iPhone appeared first on The Game Jar.

After the triumphantly average performance of Gran Turismo 5, it was all but formally announced yesterday that Gran Turismo 6 will be released for Playstation 3 in the traditionally vague Americanised timeframe of ‘Holiday’. We’re not sure whose holiday the games industry has become obsessed with, or what their destination is, but one thing is certain: we’re not too bothered. It’s not that Gran Turismo is a bad series, or that we don’t think it will perform well, but Gran Turismo 5 is seen as being something of a let down. We were let down every time the game was delayed, we were let down by the baffling user interface, and we were most of all let down by the fact that the game didn’t have a soul. Again, Gran Turismo 5 wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t rev our engines in the same way that it used to, or even in the same way that Forza does now. Its flatness is somewhat comparable to the PSP; technically this is a powerful masterpiece, but in my hands… I’m just not moved. So news of Gran Turismo 6 is not going to set any petrol alight. What do we know about Gran Turismo 6, aside from its preposterously vague release date? Well, it will feature all the cars from GT5, with a few new ones, bringing the car total up to about 1,200. That’s cool. Silverstone will be making an appearance among a few other new tracks, and of course, there’s the ’r’ word. “GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to ‘the Real Driving Simulator’”, says the press release. Of course – realism – because that’s what the series needs more of. Of course the release also assures us that they’re working on “stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface” – so we’re not quite throwing them under the bus of cynicism yet. Honest. We’ll wait until the ‘Holiday 2013’ to make our judgement. Well, let’s be honest, we’ll wait until 2014 when the game actually comes out. Click here for the announcement trailer, or here for the announcement screenshots.

The post Gran Turismo 6 Announced for PS3 – Get Ready to Shrug appeared first on The Game Jar.

Video Games The Movie, a feature length documentary, aims to tell the untold story of video games by an in depth look into not only how games are made, marketed and consumed but by looking back at the industryʼs history, current trends as well as the evolution of gamer culture. Where is the industry and the audience headed? Is it the same place? The entire story will be told through the eyes of game developers, publishers, and consumers. The film is not just another film about the games industry but will attempt something much more ambitious: the question of what it means to be a gamer, a game maker and where “video” games will be in 10, 20, even 100 years from now. Their Kickstarter can be found here!

The post Video Games The Movie – Kickstarter trailer appeared first on The Game Jar.
